Back in October last year, Mike Olson wrote about how to Turn Your ‘Data Lake’ into an Enterprise Data Hub. As Mike mentioned, Hadoop’s scope and mission has rapidly expanded in just a few short years. Our customers no longer view Hadoop just as cheap and reliable storage that supports a massively parallel processing framework, but as a foundation that their most critical business processes rely on. To take it a step further, the conversation now is about the big data business solutions that the technology ecosystem supports: Financial companies build critical risk models with Hadoop; healthcare companies rely on Hadoop to improve patient outcomes and reduce the cost of care; consumer companies rely on Hadoop to power applications woven into our everyday lives. As the criticality of the applications running on Hadoop increased, our customers have demanded enterprise grade maturity from the Hadoop ecosystem.
Cloudera’s enterprise data hub (EDH) has been squarely focused at providing this maturity through security (end-to-end encryption, advanced and granular access controls), manageability (deployment, monitoring, diagnostics, backup and replication), and governance (audit, metadata management, lineage tracking). Today, EMC, has taken another step in making the Hadoop ecosystem enterprise readying in announcing the EMC® Business Data Lake (BDL).
At Cloudera, we share a common vision with EMC: for a data lake to deliver value, more is needed than a large amount of shared storage. Customers need security and access control, strong performance, and assistance through tooling and automation to leverage the data that’s stored. EMC’s BDL lays out a comprehensive vision of a cohesive, enterprise-grade data lake solution that can deliver on these needs.
In addition to this common vision, we also support EMC’s commitment to interoperability with third party tools to allow customers to leverage best of breed solutions that are appropriate for them. With over 1,400 certified partners, Cloudera’s commitment to interoperability and the benefits it provides to customers is clear. Toolsets designed to work together allow customers to scale the success of existing investments in infrastructure and skill sets and recognize the value of new investments much more quickly. Joint certification of Cloudera on EMC Isilon is one tangible example of how our cooperation is already empowering customers and we are excited about continuing to work with EMC to deliver enterprise ready solutions through a combination of Cloudera’s enterprise data hub and the EMC Business Data Lake.
